    Digital TV

Posted on March 16, 2008 20:11 by kate

I'm one of those people that just have "antenna" television. Decided to get with the future and get the digital tv converter box. With the help of the government *coupon* it only cost $13 at Wal-mart. Laughing.  Thanks to Brian (briank.glmotorsports.net) and the "nerd" in him, he mocked up an antannae that picks up all the local channels! The best part is that the converter picks up "secret" channels too. Digital tv offers regular WTOL/CBS programming, Regular ABC programinng, 13.2 (HD) 13.3 (Weather) 24.1 & 24.2 (which I found had old episodes of Knight Rider on Sunday nights at 7 (I have them all on DVD so that doesn't matter) but was wondering what else is hidden in between regular programming.

It may not be exciting to others who have 200 channels with cable but I went from 5 channels (11/13/24/30/36 - occassionaly 40/48) to 11 channels (11.1/13.1/13.2/13.3/24.1/24.2/24.3/30.1/30.2/30.3/36.1) Use to get the BG PBS station but I chose the other channels to have better reception (When we moved the antannae to pick up the other channels better we lost 27, but really it's PBS and since I don't give them money I'm stealing from them.

First blog and a very cool day!

I'm impressed with the image quality when it works, but there's definitely a sudden drop off from "working perfect" to useless signal, unlike analog where you might get a fuzzy, but still usable picture.

Worth the effort (especially with the bonus sub-channels), but it's sad that it requires as much effort as it does. You're simply not going to do as well (or perhaps at all for fringe area viewers) with the same old antenna. Requires a significantly better antenna to get the same group of stations. Hopefully that doesn't keep too many people from enjoying the upgrade though...

Our "better" antenna was an old FM broadcast band di-pole mated to some scrap coaxial cable. Tried 2 configurations, one with the proper 4:1 balun and one without. Performs noticeably better without the balun, despite the mismatch, but both were much better than standard "rabbit ears". Interesting. Smile
